Have you been there?
Portuguese has no form for have been. Use já (already, ever) and the past tense from this module. For never, use nunca. For not yet, use ainda não:
| Portuguese | English |
|---|---|
| Você já foi a Salvador? | Have you been to Salvador? |
| Já fui, sim. | Yes, I have. |
| Nunca fui. | I have never been. |
| Ainda não fui. | I have not been yet. |
| Você já conhece o Rio? | Have you been to Rio? |
Places to talk about
| Place | What it is |
|---|---|
| o Pantanal | a huge wetland in the Center-West |
| os Lençóis Maranhenses | white dunes and lagoons in Maranhão |
| Foz do Iguaçu | the city of the big waterfalls, in Paraná |
| Fernando de Noronha | islands in the Atlantic, part of Pernambuco |
Telling the story
- Fiquei duas semanas em Salvador.
- Adorei a comida.
- Fui ao Pantanal ano passado.
All together
- Você já foi ao Nordeste?
- Já fui, sim! Fiquei duas semanas em Recife, em 2023.
- E você já conhece a Amazônia?
- Ainda não fui, mas vou no ano que vem.
Pay attention! For places, Brazilians often use conhecer, which also means to know. Eu não conheço o Rio does not mean you know nothing about it: it means you have never been there.
