Two ways to say we
In everyday Brazilian Portuguese, people often say a gente instead of nós. Both mean we, but a gente uses the same verb form as ele and ela:
| Nós | A gente | English |
|---|---|---|
| nós trabalhamos | a gente trabalha | we work |
| nós moramos | a gente mora | we live |
| nós estamos | a gente está | we are |
| nós temos | a gente tem | we have |
- A gente mora em Curitiba.
- A gente almoça junto às vezes.
- A gente se vê amanhã!
Nós is more common in writing and in formal situations. In conversation, you will hear a gente all the time.
More than one person
- Vocês moram aqui?
- Eles trabalham juntos.
- Elas estudam à noite.
Pay attention! Say a gente trabalha, never a gente trabalhamos. A gente always takes the ele, ela form.
