Ser: to be
The verb ser (to be) is the one you use to say who you are and where you are from.

| ELA = she | é | Ela é Maria. |
Você is the word for you all over Brazil. Notice that você, ele and ela all use the same form: é.
Your name
- Qual é o seu nome?
- Meu nome é Ana.
- Eu sou Ana.
Where you are from
Use ser de and a city to say where you are from.
- De onde você é?
- Eu sou de Londres.
- Ela é de Madri.
With countries, de often changes (do Brasil, da Itália). You will learn this in module 2.
Pay attention! Brazilians often drop eu, because sou already tells who is speaking: Sou de Londres. Both forms are correct.
