Hello and goodbye
| Portuguese | English | When |
|---|---|---|
| Oi | Hi | Informal, with people you know |
| Olá | Hello | A little more neutral |
| Bom dia | Good morning | Until noon |
| Boa tarde | Good afternoon | From noon to around 6 p.m. |
| Boa noite | Good evening, good night | After dark, to say hello and goodbye |
| Tchau | Bye | The most common goodbye |
| Até logo | See you later | When you will see the person again |
| Até amanhã | See you tomorrow | At the end of the day |
Notice that bom goes with dia, but boa goes with tarde and noite. You will learn why in module 2; for now, learn them as fixed phrases.
How are you?
The most common question is Tudo bem? The answer usually repeats the same words.
- Tudo bem? → Tudo bem, e você?
- Tudo ótimo!
- Como vai? (a little more formal) → Vou bem, obrigado.
Thank you
Men say obrigado and women say obrigada. The word follows the person who is speaking, not the person you are thanking.
Pay attention! In Brazil, Tudo bem? is part of the greeting. People expect a short answer, usually Tudo bem!, and not a long story.
